Two Thoughts on Design and Out of Home Sales

Pete Hautem, Out of home sales rep

Pete Hautem has 44 years experience selling out of home.  We asked him for his thoughts on how design and sales are connected and said said this.

Design the out of home first, when you’ve got a multi-media campaign

Many years ago we always told creative directors I’ve you’re going to use a multi-media campaign design the out of home ad first and expand from there.  It’s really easy to expand a campaign.  Must easier than it is to shrink a campaign.  When you have a out of home campaign you’ve got to make it pop.

Sometimes visuals can help you sell

When I worked in Atlanta I carried in my briefcase 100 8” by 10’ glossy pictures of billboards around the country.  I had them categories – food, automobiles, whatever.  If I had the interest of the owner I’d reach into my briefcase and say, “let me show you some things going on in other parts of the country that are effective.”  You slide the picture under the owner’s nose.  That starts creating a positive conversation.  You don’t lead with art.  You ask questions first to make sure you understand the customer’s needs.  But if the customer is interested art can help.
