Los Angeles-The competition to select a contractor for one of the world’s largest street furniture programs entered its final stage with multiple public demonstrations of the finalists’ designs and technologies. The City of Los Angeles’ Sidewalk and Transit Amenities Program (STAP) was developed over the last year with input from the out of home advertising, telecommunications, infrastructure, industrial design and architectural industries as well as community based organizations, transit and active transportation providers and advocates and the public.

The STAP Request for Proposals was issued in November 2020. After a thorough evaluation process, the city selected Tranzito and the incumbent joint venture, Outfront Media/JCDecaux, as finalists. The two were invited to display sample STAP elements at six demonstration events across the City of Los Angeles through the end of July. Find more information on the program and demonstration events at https://streetsla.lacity.org/stap. The City is taking additional public input at the events as it works to finalize program details and the procurement process.

“These viewings will enable us to solicit valuable feedback from our stakeholders, especially transit riders on bus shelters and what information and features they would like to have available to them,” said StreetsLA Executive Director Keith Mozee.

The essential goals of STAP are to provide shelter, shade, safety, and comfort to transit riders and pedestrians, while incorporating smart technology to provide important and timely information.

City Council action is expected later in the year to  formalize a new agreement with the chosen contractor in order for STAP to begin operations in January 2022.
