Jen Clites and Shawna Hanson on Sign Permitting

The Daktronics Experience podcast interviewed Jen Clites and Shawna Hanson on digital sign permitting.  Some of the highlights.

How Daktronics helps customers with regulations

The most common thing that we do is the customer…will ask the sign legislation team to look up local codes…and tell them whether it’s likely or unlikely to put a sign there.  Another thing we do is a lot of localities have rules about the light output…so we can provide information and manufacturer certification letters…we can provide light studies if there’s concern about the light output…Local governments can be concerned that too much digital signage might be hazardous to traffic…or ugly…we have case studies that speak to both of those concerns.

Light studies

We have an engineer who runs the numbers…Where it’s helpful is where we’re adjacent to a residential area…nightime light might be a concern…we can do those studies…the standard margin of what’s acceptable lighting…

Community benefits of digital billboards

Covid’s a great example of this.  Our content creators have put together a number of content pieces for different customers of ours related to covid protocols or clinic times or public service announcement stuff.  Another example is amber alerts…you get an amber alert out and it displays on the billboard…and then your business owners are part of a community.  They’re connected with the other people in their town…they’ll often provide advertising for non-profits or schools…
