Ask an Expert: How do you convince a client to run better art?

A reader writes My longtime customer’s artwork and vinyl look terrible, but I can’t get them to even respond to my requests to update. Starting to make me and them look bad. Any suggestions?  We asked Melody Robert of Out of Home Creative what she would do and she said this:

I think it’s great that you reached out for suggestions and that you care that not only your client’s business is starting to look bad, but also the company you work for by having what sounds like an outdated advertisement and possibly a faded vinyl?

I don’t know if you’re emailing, calling, or texting the client or have tried to go to the business itself. If you haven’t tried meeting the client in person yet, I would hire or work with your in-house designer to develop speculatory artwork. And schedule a meeting to present new, fresh ideas to show them you invested time into their business and advertising with the new concepts. If you cannot get them to respond to an in-person meeting, stop by and see if they’re available or leave the creative with someone. Whatever you can do to get new innovative ideas in front of them may get them interested in contacting you back.

I read they’re a “longtime customer,” so maybe the issue could be that they don’t know what else to advertise, don’t have someone who can design a new advertisement, or don’t have the budget to pay someone to come up with new ideas. Presenting spec art can be very helpful; you can show concepts they may not have considered for their brand, and it takes the pressure off them to come up with something.

I don’t know if you’ve done all of the above, so these are all guesses based on your question to Billboard Insider. If you haven’t done some of the suggested, I hope this helps! If you need additional help feel free to contact me @ melody@outofhomecreative.com.

  1. I have a follow up question to: How do you convince a client to run better artwork?
The issue we have is a client provides their own artwork and it’s terrible. We provide them with a better alternative and they still choose their message. How do you convince a client to run better artwork when they have provided their own artwork?
